A friend and I took an hour out of our day to go pick blueberries this afternoon. After weeks of really nice summer weather, today it had to be grey and rainy. David couldn’t go because he went to help build a fence, so I tried to pick enough for the both of us. David LOVES fresh blueberries. He would like nothing better than to tear out our grapes and replace them with blueberry bushes, which could still occur.
Last year, I went to Blueberry Hill Farm but today we tried Bonny Slope Blueberries, which was much closer. A pound of (unsprayed) blueberries was $1.75, and I ended up with almost two pounds. When we first arrived, there were a couple other cars in the gravel parking area, but by the end we were all by ourselves. Even the shed/booth was completely un-staffed. There was just a table with buckets and a scale, along with a handwritten calculation sheet (for people like me who can’t do math). To pay, you just put your money in the table’s single drawer, all based on the honor system. I thought that was pretty cool.
The website I used to help locate u-pick farms in my area is PickYourOwn.org which lists by state, and even some in other countries. They also include tips on picking and storage, including this one on blueberries.
