Rubber Duck Party! **Part 1**

We threw Chloe her 3rd birthday party this past week. It was tons of fun – both for me to plan and for her and her friends to enjoy. Chloe’s bathroom is awash in rubber ducks and that seemed to naturally segue into a perfect party theme for a soon-to-be three-year-old.

I’ll go more into party details in the next post (including some pdf printables), but meanwhile, here are some wonderful photos of the big event taken by my talented friend Greta:

Marshmallow pops

Party water bottles

3 tiers of rubber duck cupcakes

Peanut butter cup “mini-cupcakes”

The treats table

More of her photos can be seen here.

A bit of happiness

Covering a wall with butterflies

Do you ever search the web to find a little bit of happiness? To me, the web is kind of like a magazine, full of ideas and inspiration and eye-candy (depending on where you look). One blog that is always good for the aforementioned qualities is Color Me Katie. She’s a photographer living in Brooklyn and shares lots of happy and colorful things, from crafts, to street art, to improv. I envy her rare gift that makes the ordinary extraordinary.  Take a look at these photos and see if her feel-good work doesn’t make your day a little bit more sunny. 🙂

More neat things I can live without

I just opened a Design Within Reach mailer (who knows how long it’s been sitting on my desk), and I was struck by a few things that really wowed me. Now, I am a practical person, so none of these things are going to make my Christmas list (unless there exists a parallel universe in which I am rich and already have everything else I really want), but I thought I’d share them here. Because it’s free to do that.

Hakutan Coal Air Purifier
– According to the web site, this is “white charcoal”, made from Korean oak, that is clean to the touch and naturally purifies the air without the use of chemicals. Can you believe that? After it stops working you can crush it and add it to planting soil. I love that it looks like a wood sculpture. I’d keep it on my desk. Also shown are the Chikutan Coal Water Purifiers which are also white charcoal, but made from Japanese bamboo, which “absorbs impurities from beverages.” You can stir a glass-like stick “in tea, water or alcohol to give it a cleaner taste.”

These Wax Crayons in a Box appeal to me in every way. They are beautiful, useful, natural (pure beeswax and pigments), foster creativity in a multitude of ways (from drawing, layering, and etching to even melting!) and come in a sweet wooden box. I’m guessing they don’t break as easily as Crayolas do, either. These would be seriously cool if I was a true artiste.

Japanese Masking Tape
and dispenser. How fun are these? And how do the Japanese make everything so darn cute? I’d buy these if I saw them at Ikea, because that is probably the only place where I could afford them. There, or at the dollar store!

The Deco Tape Bandwagon

Can you believe the deco tape phenomenon? I haven’t bought any yet, but every time I read a posting about it I get the shivers all over again. Every package I’ve ever received wrapped with a strip or two of deco tape has seemed that much more special. And it’s so quick and easy! Some of my favorites:

Deco Packing Tape and Envelope Wrap from TapeSwell (via design sponge)

Rich & Deep 10pk Japanese Washi Paper Tape from Happy Tape (via Ohdeedoh)

Jumbo Deco Tape from My Happy Store

Autobahn Floor Tape at Up to You Toronto (via Ohdeedoh)

Swap Package

I just want to share this amazing swap package that I found in the mail yesterday. It is from Pina, my thoughtful blog pal from Slovenia. The photo just doesn’t do justice to the fine details in her handmade creations – the lovely pouch with pink button and felt bird, the sweet scent of lavender from the felted stone, the perfectly chosen fabric on the elephant softie for Chloe, plus a gorgeous bar of dark chocolate to boot! See how talented she is?! Thank you so much Pina. You inspire me with your talent and generosity!

Bag Tag

I saw this bag tag on Koala Fuzz and thought I’d play. Here are the rules for the tag:

  1. Post a picture of whatever bag you are using today – not last weekend when you and your hubby went out to that fabulous restaurant. No cheating!!!
  2. Tell us how much it cost. This is a no-judgment zone — there will be no ridiculing or eye rolling here. And, if there is a story to go along with how you obtained it, tell us.

Here is a quick-and-dirty photo of my bag. It’s a chocolate suede Cole Haan that I’ve had for about 4 years. I bought it at the Nike Employee store during a brief freelancing stint for Brand Jordan, the fall after I graduated. I loved it on site. I can’t remember how much I paid, but it was dirt cheap compared to retail. I hardly used it that first year, thinking it was just “so fancy.” I mostly use this bag in the fall and winter, and other bags for summer. Actually, I should also be showing a photo of the brown leather Coach wristlet that I got for my birthday. It belonged to my mother-in-law and I admired it the last time she was here for a visit, so she gave it to me. I use it when all I want to carry is my phone, lip balm and card wallet. Unfortunately, it is in Chloe’s diaper bag, which is in the car, and I’m not feeling motivated to go out and get it in this weather. It is pretty cool, though.

I’m not going to tag anyone, but please let me know if you decide to play along!
