DIY Paper-Covered Jewelry Organizer

Over the years I’ve collected, or been given, various pieces of jewelry. I stopped wearing most of it when Chloe was born (except for my wedding ring), and now that she is a little older I’ve begun to phase in a few pieces every now and again. Often I forget what I own until I go digging around in the box. The earrings and bracelets are organized somewhat decently, but the lengths of necklaces and pendants are all jumbled together. It is not a pretty sight.

Months ago I chose some paper and hardware to make two necklace hangers, although the hooks would also work nicely for rings and bracelets, too. Here is the one I made last week. It is sized to fit a narrow space on the wall of my closet. That’s the nice thing about making something yourself – it can be whatever you want it to be, plus it would make a sweet gift. The wood came from Home Depot (recycled from another project), the paper from Craft Warehouse and the hardware from Target.

Materials
12 x 12 sheet of heavy scrapbook paper
4 x 10″ piece of wood
7/8″ nickel-plated cup hooks
2 sawtooth hangers

Tools
Xacto Knife
Cutting Mat
Bone Folder
Glue or Double stick tape

Step 1: Fold the paper around the board, basically like you’re gift-wrapping a present. For best results, run the tip of a bone folder along the edges to make the smoothest and straightest folds possible.

Step 2: Seal the sides down with adhesive. I used double stick tape.

Step 3:
Make a tiny mark where you want the cup hooks to go. Drill pilot holes at each mark so the cup hooks will go in smoothly, and then screw them in. Finish by lightly pounding in the sawtooth hangers on the back side, one at each of the upper corners. Enjoy!

Bird silhouette magnets + template pdf

I’ve been meaning to make a little handmade something to put in the mail for someone who likes birds. I finally sat down and came up with this – felt bird magnets! After choosing some simple silhouettes, I cut them out of stiffened eazy felt. Then I cut the same shapes slightly smaller out of a re-used piece of adhesive magnet to apply to the back. I hope she likes them!

Would you like to make a set of your own? If so, you can click the image above or download the bird silhouette template pdf here.

Giveaway Winner!

Thanks to everyone who left a comment on the Valentine Idea: Day 8 – Hair Accessories + Giveaway! post. There were twice as many comments as I expected!

And the winner is… Kerry! Kerry please be sure to email me your address to paperseed [at] gmail [dot] com, so I can send out your hair clips. They may even arrive just in time for Nora’s birthday, although it looks like she’s got about as much hair as my little one! They’ll be perfect for next Valentine’s day, though. Congratulations! :-)

Showing off my sparklies

This winter I’ve been a very lucky girl in the necklace department. I was perusing Etsy for Christmas gift ideas when the Ice and Snow necklace popped up. I hemmed and hawed about buying it for myself, since I was supposed to be looking for gifts to give, not to keep. A while later I found it again, but the price had gone up. I hadn’t realized that it had been on sale! A quick convo to a very understanding Erin brought the price back down, and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I love the balanced trio of coin pearl, white topaz briolette and the handstamped silver snowflake charm.

The center Skipping Lilies pendant was given to me by my soon-to-be sister-in-law, Aundrea. I am looking for a chain to wear with it, although it would look equally good on a simple leather or silk cord. The style is based on a stained-glass technique and seals tiny dried botanicals within its casing. I know it will get a lot of wear, plus the solder is lead-free which makes it safer around baby.

The third necklace was handmade for me by my sister-in-law, Liza. You can see some of her other lovely jewelry creations here. This particular necklace is moonstone with pearl and iridescent grey beads. It is quite elegant and unlike anything else I own. I always feel good wearing it, which is the point of nice jewelry, don’t you think?

Make Your Own Last-Minute Father's Day Card

As usual, I put off making David a Father’s Day card until the very last minute. Being his very first Father’s Day as a father, I didn’t want to just let it go, either, so I whipped up this card with a few minutes to spare. As you can probably see from the photo, I took a blank card and cut the word “Dad” out with an exacto knife. Then I glued some colored paper behind it to make it pop. Normally, pink wouldn’t have been my first choice, but being a last minute project didn’t make for many options. I figured David was man enough to handle it anyhow. Want to make your own? You can download and print this pdf template (originally sized for a 5×7 card).

Making Freezer Paper Stencils (free pdf download)

What do you think of Chloe’s new tee shirt? See below to download the dragonfly stencil.

Freezer paper stencils are awesome! Not as “perfect” as screen printing, but easy and fun for single projects just the same. Watch out family, you may all be getting stenciled items for Christmas this year…

Wading through all the tutorials available, I found this one to be pretty helpful. Originally, I hadn’t been able to find freezer paper at my local supermarket (although I did see it recently at Fred Meyer). I opted to go with the large freezer paper sheets from Dharma Trading Post, since I was going to order some t-shirt blanks anyway (1,2,3,4). The nice thing about the rolls though, is you can make your stencil any length, but I think I read somewhere that craft freezer paper may have a better bond.

I’ve tried two brands of ink so far – Speedball Fabric Screen Printing Ink (which my husband already had from previous screen printing projects) and Jacquard Professional Screen Printing Ink. I don’t know if the Speedball ink was just too old, but it took two applications to get good coverage. Afterwards, the directions say to iron for 3-5 minutes on each side to set, which seemed like a really long time. I prefer the Jacquard. It applied better, nicely staining the fabric, and just needed one application for full coverage. Plus, it only took 1 minute to heat set.

While some of the ideas shown above are mine, others came from places like Arthur’s Silhouette Clipart Plants and Animals and Briar Press. I’d love to hear in the comments section if anyone has a favorite, because sometimes I just can’t decide. Also, Greta was sweet to post a photo of the yellow butterfly top and matching socks I made for her daughter Ava’s first birthday. Want to make your own butterfly, dragonfly or flower shirt? Postscript: I also have bird silhouette templates available to download that I made for another project, which would also work well as freezer paper stencils.

Mother's Day Card

Okay, this isn’t exactly a mother’s day card, but it will be what I’ll be sending out this year. I originally designed this card for Chloe’s Great Grandma Rita. Her birthday was right around Easter and even though we have a family calendar listing everyone’s birth dates (thanks Andrew & Aundrea!), we still missed it. Plus, this little mini-album fulfills my need to finally make a birth announcement-type card, without having to make more than a handful.

The inside shows monthly photos of Chloe from newborn to her current 5 months, and the back has a personalized line listing who it is for and the date.

It is kind of funny how projects like this start – I saw the baby feet stickers at the craft store and had no idea what I was going to do with them. I just thought they were so cute, and voilá, a project is born! :-)

Swap Package

I just want to share this amazing swap package that I found in the mail yesterday. It is from Pina, my thoughtful blog pal from Slovenia. The photo just doesn’t do justice to the fine details in her handmade creations – the lovely pouch with pink button and felt bird, the sweet scent of lavender from the felted stone, the perfectly chosen fabric on the elephant softie for Chloe, plus a gorgeous bar of dark chocolate to boot! See how talented she is?! Thank you so much Pina. You inspire me with your talent and generosity!

Felt Flower Hair Clip Giveaway!

I finally found some time to make some new hair clips! These are just so fun. I can’t wait until Chloe has enough hair. Meanwhile it gives me plenty of time to build up my stash, since I’ve been giving most away as little gifts. I also decided to add a few to my sorely neglected etsy shop, and included a couple with matching cards:

Would you like to win the white felt flower hair clip in the top photo? Leave a comment below on this post and I’ll announce a random winner next weekend. Good Luck!

My First Softie

Here is the softie for the swap I mentioned earlier. The pattern is from the book Sew Pretty Christmas Homestyle. It turned out pretty good for a first attempt. Sewing such small, rounded corners was quite a challenge. The fabric is the same dot print used on the art cards that are also part of the swap package, and I used non-toxic fabric paint for the eyes and nose. The set is going to my partner’s new nephew, whose room is done in baby blue and brown, and she is a big fan of polka dots. Hope they like it!

Cute Fabric Art Cards

I made this set of little notecards today as part of a swap package. They were inspired by all the cool fabric art and cute graphics I’ve come across lately. I cut the shapes out of scraps of flannel and craft felt and glued them in place. The other part of the swap package will consist of a softie, which I’ve never made before. I’m not sure if my sewing skills are up to something like that, but I guess I will be finding out soon!

Baby Craft Tutorial Roundup

A while back I started a page devoted completely to cool baby craft tutorials. There is a tab below the blog header that links to it. It contains a mix of my own tutorials and other people’s projects. So far there are tutorials for baby hair clips, appliqued onesies, felt baby shoes, burp cloths, kimono wrap, diaper and wipes pouch (poopy clutch), knit hat with earflaps, LED baby booties, diaper cake and embellishing baby tees. I hope to add more as I come across them on the net, so check back if you’re interested, or let me know what some of your favorite ones are and I’ll add them to the list.

Handmade for Baby Swap

Handmade for baby swap

I forgot to mention this, but I’m hosting a swap on swap-bot called Handmade for Baby – Useful. The signup ends today, but here is the listing description if anyone is interested…

Find yourself making all kinds of handmade baby items? This is the chance to share your talent!

Each swap partner will make something handmade (and useful) for their partner’s baby. This could be burp cloths, handmade disposable diaper, onesie or t-shirt, bib(s), booties, quilt or blanket, diaper changing mat, etc. The important thing is that the item is handmade with care in some way – sewn, embellished, knit, embroidered, etc.

In the comments section (on the swapbot page), you can state if you have a boy or a girl and provide their name, if you’d like. Partners may not make a specific request, but can include one thing that they WOULD NOT want to receive. If you choose to make something that needs a specific size (clothing or diaper), then it is important that you message your partner.
